This commentary analyzes the legal and political implications of UN Resolution 2334, which 1) condemns the presence and construction of Israeli settlements on Palestinian territory, and 2) is one of the few cases where the UN Security Council has issued a resolution that’s based solely on the dictates of international law. So, what will happen if other merit-based resolutions gain traction in the future? The text’s author predicts that states may start withdrawing from international institutions in order to avoid “unfavorable outcomes.”
