This paper examines the US defense economy in times of crisis. The author discusses the following topics: the financing of the recovery and expansion of defense production in an emergency, the balancing of the safety and environmental laws and concerns with those of national security, the management roles and decision-making at the national level and allocations of the critically short material among defense and other users. The author examines two cases to support his argumentation.
