This paper discusses the strategic interests of the Soviet Union in Iran. The author provides a historical overview of Soviet geopolitics in the Middle East and describes the political relationship between the Soviet Union and Iran as it presented itself in 1989. The paper also gives some advice for a future US policy on Iran, concluding that harmonious relations between Iran and the Soviet Union do not automatically threaten US or Western security interests, unless they are used by the Kremlin to expand its sphere of influence over Iran.
