This paper discusses the issue of troop deployment in regional conflicts, with a focus on the movement of the US troops during the First Gulf War. The author argues that lessons of the Gulf War can help reshape the US defense transportation system for the post-Cold War era and that commitment to a balanced and unified mobility strategy should provide the most cost effective, rapidly deployable, and sustainable combat capability. The paper concludes that in order to execute a credible crisis response strategy, a world power must be able to readily surge strategic mobility, and reliably move equipment and supplies on the battlefield.
