This paper assesses the security situation in Ukraine after the break up of the Soviet Union. The author provides an in-depth analysis of the country's political and economic situation and examines its relation with Russia. The paper concludes that the nature of the civil and political identity that will evolve in Ukraine has yet to be clearly defined and will emerge slowly.
