This paper discusses perspectives for the European Services Directive intended to serve as a cornerstone of the ailing Lisbon strategy to revive growth and jobs in the EU. It reviews the European Commission proposal and the Parliament position, against the background of the present situation without the directive. The paper concludes that if the Parliament can be persuaded to backtrack on some amendments, the revised directive can be an effective instrument in bringing down existing barriers in the Internal Market, and therefore it deserves support.
