This commentary argues that President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to stabilize the Middle East through strategic bilateral partnerships is unlikely to fare any better than similar attempts made by previous US administrations. With all-too-familiar problems fueling civil strife across the region (repression, humanitarian catastrophes, and militant violence), the text’s author warns that Trump’s proposed policies could make things worse rather than better.
