This paper seeks to demonstrate that the successful deployment of multinational units requires the synchronization of national decision-making procedures. The authors explain that if the political processes behind multinational participation are not adequately coordinated, states may come to regret their participation in a multinational military unit. Thus, it is emphasized that although it may be very difficult to harmonize national decision-making processes in structural ways, some forms of synchronization are required and necessary in the short term. The authors state that in order to achieve synchronization, the character of national decision-making processes must to be taken into account.
