This paper analyzes the position of Italy as an EU border country with important policy implications, both the field of migration policy and in developing the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). It concludes by stating that Italy can neither afford to take a confrontational attitude toward the EU nor face the challenges connected with its border destiny unilaterally.
