This paper takes the example of the forced deportation of Romany families from Belgium in arguing that it is important that the current EU member states respect human rights conventions. The member states should set the example to the candidate countries in the forthcoming enlargement. It further suggests that respect of human rights conventions and guidelines is an explicit prerequisite for candidate countries to be eligible for the accession to the EU.
