This paper analyzes EU border policy in regard to non-member countries in Southeastern and Eastern Europe. It outlines the application of the Schengen acquis concerning border controls and visas, and argues that the imposition of restrictive principles for crossing the borders will contribute to the widening of these gaps, which will be detrimental to the EU as a whole.
