This conference report focuses on the dimension of the Muslim revival in the context of the discourse on the state. It discusses the role of Islam in the state, the place of the Sharia, and the relationship between the state and civil society. The panelists stress the importance of highlighting the progressive nature of Islam in view of the alleged bad press that Islam has been given, which, they argue, contributes to the deterioration in the relationship between the Muslim world and the West. The participants examine one possible strategy to fight extremism, namely to empower the progressive elements in Muslim society.
