This paper summarizes the proceedings of a conference organized by the IDSS and Georgetown University's Mortara Center for International Studies on security cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. Conference participants assessed the main topic from thematic and theoretical perspectives, and discussed ways forward in thinking about regional security cooperation in general. Other themes and aims included the establishment of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), UN peacekeeping and peace-building activities in Asia, the 1997 Asian economic crisis and the September 11 terrorist attacks. They also examined the emergence of counterterrorism as a dominant arena for regional security cooperation and the relationship between economic and strategic security.
