This paper discusses the ambiguous relationship between humanitarian action and politics. The aim of the paper is to mediate between politics and needs. In the conclusion the author suggests to focus on assessing and meeting people’s physiological needs equitably in order to politicize humanitarian action according to need. He also proposes working out what makes people safe and being frank with one another about the legitimate needs of donor governments.
