This paper considers the problems of defense equipment acquisition from a UK perspective. It presents the "smart acquisition" initiatives of the UK Defense Ministry to improve the process of defense equipment. The paper also examines trends in defense equipment toward higher unit costs and higher fixed/variable cost ratios and outlines some of the effects of national acquisition policies.
