This paper examines the legal and political implications of France’s draft law on the Armenian genocide that penalizes the denial of the existence of the genocide. It briefly summarizes the articles of the draft law and analyzes the implications for the enlargement of the EU, for Turkey and for the European Area of Freedom, Security and Justice. The paper concludes that the political impact is large and has negative consequences for both enlargement process and EU relations with Turkey.
