This paper examines the different challenges to the New Order version of Indonesian history and the rewriting of that history for Indonesia's future. The paper discusses the restructuring of the Indonesian state as well as the process of decentralization and the devolution of power to the Indonesian provinces. The paper reviews the contribution of the Indonesian armed forces to the country's past and addresses their future role. Furthermore, the author discusses the role of Islam in Indonesia's past and future.
