This paper describes how geopolitical reasoning provides the spatial framework for the development of grand strategy. The author examines the doctrine of US President George W Bush, which was developed as a response to the 11 September 2001 attacks, and looks at the doctrine in the context of international grand strategy. The paper explains that the Bush doctrine and US concept of grand strategy are flawed, both because of the Bush administration's failure to understand the geography of terror and its reluctance to learn the lessons from imperial history and previous international, geopolitical failures.
