This paper examines the dynamics and results of Indonesia's first direct local executive elections in the case of the gubernatorial elections in the Riau Archipelago. The author studies the specific election processes, identifies the major issues before, during and after the elections, and assesses voter participation. The paper places the local gubernatorial elections in Riau in the context of overall national politics in Indonesia.
