This briefing examines the role of the EU in the Community of the Andean Nations  - Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. EU involvement focuses mainly on democracy and human rights and poverty reduction. The briefing argues that this should be paralleled by support for better security and law enforcement and more effective governance. The objective should be to define a strategic framework that complements rather than competes with US efforts in the region.
