This paper discusses the continued philosophical and religious differences within the Muslim community in Southeast Asia after 11 September 2001. The author examines the relations between Islam and society in Southeast Asia through the case studies of Indonesia and Malaysia. The paper explains how in both Asian countries the unsettled debate between proponents of liberal Islam and fundamentalist advocates of literal Islam remain unresolved and a problem with significant political implications.
