This paper analyzes the political implications of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks for US power and global hegemony. The author explains that the terrorist attacks against the homeland signify how the United States faces a multitude of security challenges, many of them far removed from simply the realm of great power competition or geopolitics. The paper states that the attacks represented a direct challenge to US values, ideology and global power projection.
