This report addresses the future of the Kurds in northern Iraq after the end of the US-led invasion with a focus on tensions with Turkey and ethnic problems. The paper provides information on the Kurd’s fate during the rule of Saddam Hussein and the Baath Party, and explores Turkey’s role in the struggle. Subsequently, the paper discusses different options for the Iraqi Kurds’ future between national independence and full incorporation in Iraq, and touches on the fight for control of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.
