This paper explores the nature of Indonesia's relations with Singapore during former president Suharto's New Order period (circa 1965-1998). The author argues that the relations not only improved but also took on a more conciliatory and co-operative countenance and that this was essentially motivated by former president Suharto's belief that the relationship could reinforce his hold on power. The author concludes that the once congenial and stable relations during the New Order period are degenerating in the post Suharto era.
