This paper examines trends in humanitarian intervention and peacekeeping in the Asia-Pacific in the light of the increasing emphasis on these issues at the global level. It also considers the involvement of the United Nations and non-state actors. After giving an overview of peacekeeping and humanitarian intervention in the post-Cold War era, the author concludes that humanitarian intervention and peacekeeping should only be contemplated after other avenues have been exhausted, if the circumstances are extreme, and if there is a good chance of success.
