This briefing analyzes the political situation in Burundi and the ongoing transition process. It presents the content of the new constitution based on the 2000 Arusha Agreement, the struggle on power sharing according to a political-ethnic basis and the positions of the most important parties. It urges the independence of the army and discusses the electoral timetable, the organization of elections and the need for their promotion throughout the country.
