This publication argues that unfettered access to the Asia-Pacific is a strategic imperative for the US if it’s to protect its wide-ranging national interests. As a result, the text's authors here examine what key trends and security concerns are shaping this region, and outline what strategy the Trump administration should adopt in response. In particular, they recommend that this strategy should focus on 1) reinforcing existing regional bilateral alliances; and 2) working with regional allies, partners and multilateral organizations to construct a rules-based order that enables Washington to deal with Beijing from a position of strength.
