This report focuses on the relationship between urbanization, migration and security in Yangon, Myanmar. In particular, the text’s author focuses on 1) how city government authorities in Yangon perceive and approach migration, particularly when it comes to informal settlements; and 2) the everyday challenges facing migrants and informal settlers in the city as well as how such problems are often addressed in various informal ways. One of the report’s key findings is that the lack of security and the constant threat of eviction facing informal settlers is contributing to crime, social disputes and a lack of social cohesion in Yangon.
