This paper discusses the October 2016 closing of the refugee camp in Calais, France, and how it symbolized Europe’s failure to solve its ongoing migrant crisis. The text’s author further outlines the origins and reasons for the camp; how the French public viewed the site; and France’s overall approach to its refugee problem, which still lacks a clear and organized policy direction.
