This publication contends that Russia’s military policy in the post-Soviet space is to ward off threats, control the region as a hegemon and limit the scope for action of external actors, such as the US, NATO or China. To achieve this, Moscow is pursuing a three-level approach, which consists of strengthening its unilateral power projection capabilities as well as its bilateral and multilateral connectivity mechanisms. However, the text’s author concludes that Russia’s desire for a zone of influence clashes with the reality of an increasingly differentiated area.
