This report analyzes the types of international police forces in peace operations. It outlines the historical context, discusses the need for mandate and mission definition, and explores the challenges of such operations in failing states. It then presents case studies on Bosnia, Haiti, Somalia, South Africa and Iraq. The report concludes by stating the the UN needs to define more clearly the competences of international civilian police and military forces and should improve their selection and training process.
