Based on the presumption that peace operations can be turned into a valuable instrument of foreign and security policy, this paper discusses preconditions for their success. The paper analyzes and refutes eight misperceptions about peace operations, showing that they are difficult and dangerous but also good options for the pursuit of national security and foreign policy interests. Subsequently, the paper explores ways to make peace operations more effective in advancing those interests. The paper argues that their success or failure depend on the character of the political, not the military, commitment.
