This paper examines how forward military basing in Eurasia has changed in the light of the new global and regional challenges and strategies since the end of the Cold War. It presents an overview of the new US policy of realignment of military forces in the region. It addresses the implications of NATO and US basing efforts in Asia and US relocation for certain parts of Europe. The paper also looks at Russia’s efforts to secure and re-establish its presence in its neighborhood. It concludes that, while the basing patterns have changed dramatically, foreign military bases remain an indispensable element for establishing states' presence abroad and projecting their military policies and strategies.
