This paper explores the background of and reasons for the violent outbreak in the Pakistani city of Karachi in May 2007. The paper presents the suspension of Pakistan's Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as the main reason for the violence, outlines the charges brought up against the chief justice and reviews his record in office. Subsequently, the paper sheds light on the domestic background of the crisis.
