This paper comments on elections results in India's largest federal state Uttar Pradesh, where the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) - which represents the formerly untouchable Dalits - achieved a single party majority. The paper explores the rise of the BSP and its leader Mayawati, discusses implications for other parties and examines possible consequences on the national level.
