This paper asks whether protectionism is a solution to the squeezing of the middle class that globalization has been blamed for. The author argues that the increase in inequality is a long-term trend resulting from a variety of economic factors, but that globalization has only had a marginal impact. He contends that protectionism will not revert any of these trends and discusses some policy options aimed at cushioning this increase in inequality.
