Since 2015 Mali’s central regions of Mopti and Ségou have become insecure hotspots. This paper contends that while international interventions involving a full range of actors and sectors are increasingly reorienting towards these regions, the sustainability of these responses depends on their ability to draw on the needs and priorities of local communities. In light of this, this paper draws on quantitative and qualitative data to analyze local perspectives in Mopti and Ségou. More specifically, the text’s authors highlight how the people in these regions understand and respond to the governance, development, and security challenges they are facing.
