This paper questions the static perception of group-identities as producing stable patterns of social conflict in Central Asia. It argues that there are group identities which are not as static as often described. The paper critically comments on the works of Kathleen Collins and Jones Luong that address Central Asia, discusses the power of Soviet transformation and explores what has shaped group identities since the end of Soviet power. The paper argues that the states of Central Asia face a lack of mechanisms for group-identity reproduction.
