This paper outlines aims and preliminary findings of a research project on Muslim life in Central Asia during time of the Soviet Union. The paper introduces the basic characteristics of the research project, delineates the used methodology and presents preliminary research findings. The paper argues that the phenomenon of the 'Soviet man' did indeed have relevance to Muslim life in Central Asia, but the Soviet identity that emerged did not correspond with the goals of the Communist Party.
