This paper addresses the evolution of trade regimes in South Asia, commenting on the development from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to the South Asian Preferential Trading Arrangement and further to the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) and draws comparisons. The paper argues that in order to benefit substantially from the free trade agreement South Asia needs to re-examine some fundamental trade and political issues and give precedence to trade.
