This paper addresses Pakistan's constitutional and Islamist crisis, commenting on the due elections at the end of 2007 and the violent seizure of the Red Mosque (Lal Masjid) complex in Islamabad in July 2007. The paper reviews the organization of Pakistan's electoral system, looks at General Pervez Musharraf's bid to run for a second term as president and looks at the positions of various political interest and pressure groups. Subsequently, the paper examines the military's role in Pakistan's politics and quarrels with respect to dismissal of the chief justice. The paper calls for free and fair elections to take place.
