This paper looks at how developments in ‘big data’ technology could provide Australia’s national security community with new tools to collect, collate and analyze information. The text’s author also looks at how the use of big data by national security actors must deal with challenges related to complexity, data quality and quantity, distortion created by biases in algorithms, and privacy concerns. The paper concludes with ten recommendations for Australia on how to effectively use big data, manage the risks associated with this technology, improve data governance, and more.
