This paper examines security challenges in Central Asia in light of the EU's strategy toward the region. The author begins with an examination of the differing definitions of "security" and disjunctions within Central Asia before moving to a discussion of the linked challenges of extremism, drug trafficking and potential instability. Recommendations for EU engagement policy toward Central Asia are presented in the conclusions.
