This paper addresses the problem of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Somalia, commenting on the lack of a central government, the commitment of 16 factional leaders to ban landmines and the results of a field mission that assessed the country's landmine situation. The paper examines Somalia's political and security environment and presents the findings of the field mission, including the landmine and UXO threat, the consequences of this threat and capacities and activities to address this problem. The paper argues that there is a real landmine/UXO problem in Somalia.
