Before the backdrop of the 60th anniversary of India's independence, this paper discusses chances and challenges related to its young and growing population. The paper contrasts India's demographic situation with that of the West, Japan and China and points to the country's low educational level. The paper underlines that ever since independence, India has maintained its democratic system of government.
