This paper discusses state and development of Pakistan, examining challenges and options facing the state, the government and the economy. The paper reviews the threat of Islamist terrorists coming to power in Pakistan, examines the possibility of an arms race between India and Pakistan and assesses the country's territorial integrity. Subsequently, the paper examines the army's role in politics, considers options for President Musharraf and investigates the economic situation. The paper argues that notwithstanding mounting difficulties, Pakistan remains a relatively stable state in South Asia.
