This paper discusses the possible impact the May-June 2015 peace agreement in Mali might have on the country’s civil society and its own abilities to promote peace. More specifically, the text’s author 1) reviews Mali’s security status and the terms of the 2015 agreement; 2) identifies the key characteristics of the civil society within the country, the role it might ultimately play in the peace process, and the barriers – both current and emerging – that could hinder its contributions to peace; and 3) stresses the policy implications of these barriers on civil society’s ability to support peace.
