Climate change is increasingly seen as a source of global security risks. However, research on this topic has been mostly limited to East Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. This publication expands this climate-conflict relationship to South Asia and South East Asia and finds context-specific evidence that climate change has an effect on violent conflict when: 1) it leads to deterioration in people’s livelihood; 2) it influences tactical considerations; 3) elites use it to exploit social vulnerabilities; and 4) it displaces people and increases migration.
