This article discusses why Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and president of the Congress Party Sonia Gandhi climbed down from the brink of calling an early election in autumn 2007. The author outlines reasons why the government party could expect to win early elections, including the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, good economic development and the disarray of the opposition. He then explains why the government nevertheless decided not to call early elections.
