This paper discusses two emerging paradigms of naval development in the Asia Pacific, namely a modern and a post-modern one. The author argues that these two paradigms reflect competing attitudes toward the process of globalization, with modern navies demonstrating a certain wariness about globalization and post-modern ones embracing it. He introduces four case studies, discussing the US, Chinese, Japanese and Indian navies. The author concludes that a review of regional naval development helps to explain the impact of globalization on the security architecture of the Asia Pacific.
